Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants to USA, Canada, and International individuals affiliated with nonprofit institutions, organizations, and IHEs for research that will further suicide prevention strategies. Applicants must submit a letter of intent prior to submitting a full proposal. Applications will be accepted from investigators representing all academic disciplines for both basic and applied research. All studies must focus primarily on suicide or suicide prevention.

Focus grants are targeted, innovative and potentially high impact studies that seek to inform and even transform suicide prevention efforts.

  • Short-Term Risk: Supports innovative, potentially high-yield solutions that focus on short-term risk for suicide. The development of identification and/or intervention strategies for short-term suicide risk that can be readily implemented in clinical settings.
  • Reaching 20% by 2025: The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has set a bold goal to reduce the nation’s suicide rate 20% by the year 2025, and the Foundation seeks the development of interventions that will save the greatest amount of lives. This program supports universal, selective or indicated interventions that target suicide prevention in healthcare systems, emergency departments, corrections settings, or among the gun owning community, that, if implemented on a large scale, would reduce the annual U.S. suicide rate.
  • Blue Sky: Supports an innovative, impactful study in an area of suicide research that will achieve significant goals. This mechanism is intended for studies that, by their very nature, are clearly beyond the scope of Innovation Grants. This program supports innovative projects in new areas of investigation with potentially high impact for the understanding and prevention of suicide. Open to all fields of inquiry

Focus Grants are awarded to experienced investigators. Although prior research on suicide is not required, applicants are expected to show evidence of prior research or research training in a related field. It is strongly recommended that a suicide researcher is a member of the research team. These grants are intended to fund new directions and initiatives in suicide research rather than to supplement the applicant's existing research and junior investigators. Collaborative projects with investigators experienced in suicide research are encouraged.

The second grant cannot begin until the final progress report and financial statement for the current grant are received by AFSP and the Initiation papers for the second grant are approved.
- Individuals may be awarded another Focus Grant subsequent to having been a PI on a previous Focus Grant. The applicant will be asked to describe the accomplishments and impact of the previous Focus Grant as part of the application.
- AFSP research grants and fellowships are awarded with the understanding that the recipient individual and institution will not accept funds from any other granting agency for research that substantially overlaps with what was approved by AFSP.
- Personnel compensated in whole or in part through an AFSP research grant are not considered employees of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, but of the grantee institution. AFSP does not assume any responsibility for the conduct of the research or other acts of the investigators. AFSP grantees are subject to the ethical and scientific policies of the grantee institution.

Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply, and both basic science and applied research projects will be considered, provided that the proposed study has an essential focus on suicide or suicide prevention.

A current grantee may submit a new application as their grant nears completion but it will not be funded until completion of the current grant and submission of a Final Report.
