Grants of up to $2,500 to Mississippi emerging and working filmmakers to support film projects. The purpose of this program is to promote the development of video and film artists as the next generation of storytellers. In addition to cash funding, grantees will receive waivers to film festivals across the state.

The Mississippi Film Alliance (MFA) will work with the filmmaker to provide waivers to film festivals in the state and ask permission to showcase the project on the MFVA website and video channels. The Foundation will work with the filmmaker depending on distribution or timelines of when to place online.

Festival Waivers: Festival partners that provide waivers to grant recipients include: Oxford Film Festival, Crossroads Film Festival, Tupelo Film Festival, Magnolia Film festival, AfterGlow Film Festival, Rails to Reels Film Festival, Festival South Film Expo, Clarksdale Film Festival and It's About You Film Festival.

MFA requires the filmmaker to fill 50% of their cast and crew positions with Mississippi residents and to produce their project in Mississippi.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The MFA board of directors will offer a maximum of $2,500 for each project. Projects requiring less than $2,500 will also be considered.

Term of Contract:

All funded projects must be completed by August 1, 2020 or an extension must be requested by July 1, 2020.

Eligibility:
-Filmmaker must be a permanent legal resident of the state of Mississippi, having lived in the state at least one full year.
-Filmmaker must be at least 16 years of age.

Pre-Application Information:

Application process begins June 1. Applications and supporting material must be mailed to MFVA at the address below postmarked on or before August 1, 2019. Applications via email are encouraged.

Grants will be awarded no later than August 15.

Filmmaker must submit an application fee of $35 or $30 if a student (with valid ID included).

The filmmakers receiving funding are required to match, dollar-for-dollar, the amount of the grant funds in either cash or in-kind contributions.

All funding and/or in-kind services secured to complete the film must be from sources such as foundations, individual donors, businesses, and corporations who expect nothing in return. Funding and/or in-kind services provided by “investors” is not eligible for consideration.

Emerging Mississippi Filmmakers Grant monies must be the last dollars in, meaning that added to the matching funds, they must be sufficient to complete the production
-Project may not be considered lobbying or influencing politics in any way
-Filmmakers may submit only one application per grant cycle.
-Awarded applicants may not apply for funding during the next grant year cycle.
-Funds may not be used to reimburse expenses already incurred prior to the issuing of the grant. In other words, films completed prior to the issuance of grant funds are ineligible.
-Filmmaker must be willing to serve as a mentor to future grant recipients.

Projects awarded grants will receive 50% of the grant money upfront. The second half is awarded at the completion of the project. If the project is not completed on time the filmmaker forfeits the second-half money.
