Grants to Mississippi organizations, agencies, and institutions of higher education to strengthen the agricultural industry in the wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis. Funding is intended to address the negative impact of the pandemic on the state's food system, including projects to assist farmworkers, farmers, food businesses, and other relevant entities to respond to risks and supply chain disruptions. The goal of the grant is to improve the competitiveness of the specialty crop industry.
Specialty crops are defined as fruits and vegetables, dried fruit, tree nuts, and horticulture and nursery crops, including floriculture. Specialty crops are plants that are intensively cultivated. Priority will be given to projects that have the potential to provide solutions that lead to measurable benefits to specialty crop growers. Funding priorities are:
Projects must solely enhance the competitiveness of Mississippi-grown specialty crops in either domestic or foreign markets. Examples of “enhancing the competitiveness” of specialty crops include, but are not limited to:
